Kiwi Sport

Today we played Touch for our Kiwi Sport. Our coach didn't teach us that much because some of my classmates didn't focus and was not listening to the coach. We played two games. First we played a game where everyone has to stand in a circle and pass 10 or 9 balls around the circle clockwise. Who ever touched the ball had to run around the park fast so we could play some more. The second game we played was Touch, but we changed the rules a bit. We were aloud to pass after getting touched, we were aloud to kick anytime.

We practised playing the ball and passing it back to the the person who got touched. We also learned how to play the ball and quickly so we could get back. Some of the people didn't get back quick enough, so we taught them.

We really had fun playing Touch and learning new skills about Touch.

Maths

Today we had a very confusing geometry lesson. I had two partners to work with. It was Mateaki and Alfred. We worked on maths problem called Carries Cubes. Each side had 9 smaller squares. There was 6 sides. We had work on these questions below. We got the answers. We solved it by drawing dots to make sure everything was right.

How many of the original small cubes have:

  1. three faces painted red = 8

  1. two faces painted red = 12

  1. one face painted red = 6

  1. no faces painted red = 1

This is a photo of Alfred, Mateaki and Me working out the problems.

Glenbrae Kids

Today room 7 went to the Glenbrae. We walked there with cool books so we could read to them. When we got there, there was a lot of little kids. Some of the kids were happy, naughty, playful and shy. My kid that I chose to stay with, was Brittney. Brittney was one of the naughty kids but I still liked her even though she was running away from us and hiding from me. Brittney didn't want to read a book because she was to young. I was about to read her the book Astarons. Sadly when we were playing we had to leave because we had to go back to school. She was still happy because she had a new friend Tati.

Argentina has very yummy foods like Asado or Chimichurri. Argentina has yum desserts as well. They have tasty chocolate cakes and chocolate muffins. Argentina's foods are very creative. They make their own foods and games.

There are millions of people in Argentina. There is about 43, 995, 357 people in Argentina right now. Argentina is about 2.78 km² wide. Argentina's capital is 203.3 km²  wide.

There are a lot of people in Argentina. Argentina is on the top of my to do list because one day I would like to visit Argentina when I am older and have permission to go with my younger brothers and friends. Here is a picture below that was taken in Argentina.

Abstract Art

The Abstract painters took a picture of the real photo and added different colours to make it hard to find. Some people actually don't need to get a photo and draw over it. They start drawing abstract art from scratch. Here is an example of what Abstract painting is.  This was the first abstract art created by Wassily Kandinsky.

Where did Abstract Art come from ?
Abstract art originally came from Europe but the person who drew the first Abstract painting came from Russia. Abstract painting was made during the late 1900s.

You colour different boxes with different colours, that's how the original art was hard to find. The first examples or abstract art was made during the 19th century and the 20th century.

Cooking Tech

Today we had our first session of Tech for term 4. Today we were supposed to do cooking with Mrs Heka but unfortunately, she couldn't teach us because she was cooking food for the Tamaki College 25th anniversary. So we went with Mrs Tuipolotu to cook us some chocolate chip cookies.

We first looked on the white board because it had rules that we are suppose to follow. There was also cooking ingredient on what we are suppose to do first. We mixed the ingredients and made a cookie shaped cookie. We made cookies with white chocolate chips and brown chocolate chips inside to make some taste. We learned how to cook cookies and we cleaned up our mess because we were made the area messy. It was a privilege to be cooking with Mrs Tuipolotu.

Cheers

Kiwi Can

Today, Room 7 had our first Kiwi Can lesson for this term. Our tutors for Kiwi Can are Mr Numia and Ms Tuia. They have been teaching us telling the truth, being helpful, listening to the teacher and many other respectful rules.

They first introduced us by saying Fakalofalahi atu. We guessed that greeting came from Niue and we were right. Next, Mr Numia asked us to line up outside so we could have our energiser. We played a game that four cones on each corner with different words stuck to them. Mr Numia had to call the words that were on the cone and had to run to the cone without getting tagged by the chosen tagger.

Once we stopped playing our energiser, we went back to room 11 so we could learn more about respect. Mr Numia asked us questions about kindness and telling the truth. After that, we started acting about the notes that have been given to us and that was our activity.

When we finished acting, we had a round of GKQ but that was our last game before we went.

Kiwi Can

Today at Kiwi can we had a very fun game and learned lost of respectful thing too. This was our last session of Kiwi Can for this term.

We played G.K.Q for our energiser. That was our first time playing energiser before we started learning. Our first question was kinda hard because Mr Numia asked us, what was the first topic for this term and answered it. The first topic was Goal setting. We learnt that goal setting has short term goals and long term goals. I also learnt how to set easier goals to get to the main goals. Then we learned problem solving and to help other people with their problems. After that we learned perseverance. Perseverance means to never give up and to keep trying.

Then we played a game called multi sport. We had to split into two teams to verse each other. We played three games, Netball, Touch and soccer. At the end we played the whole team when we played touch. That was the end of day we had fun and enjoyed it.

Science Intensive in Room 10

Today we have been learning about magnet's. Magnets is a very strong source of energy only if its is a very strong magnet. When you connect two magnets together it pulls itself together but if you turn one of the magnets around, the other magnet will try to not connect. I learnt so many things like, how to fish with a magnet and how to move a car with a magnet. Magnet's can be very helpful because if you are lost, you can use the compass which uses magnet's.

Horseshoe Magnet attracts iron filings. Illustration Vector. Editable Clip Art.

Light / Science

Light

In room 9 we have been learning about light and how the light turns int several colours.

The light is the fastest travelling thing on earth. Without light in the world we won’t be able to see coloured objects with our eyes. But we are lucky enough that we have a source of light that is called the sun. The sun creates heaps of different cool colours but all those colours can bunch up into one and create a colour called white.

Reflection is a light that shines from one object into different mirrors if placed in the right place. Light bounces of the different mirrors, big or small but it will still reflect from the mirrors. If a mirror is placed on a angle, the light will bounce somewhere else instead of hitting into the other mirror.

Refraction is when it hits a raindrop or a prism, it will turn back into the seven colours that create the rainbow. When a white light travels through the prism, it will come out as the colours that created the white light. When it goes into the prism and come out as different colours it called Refraction.

Colour is a source of light that come from the sun and earth’s energy. Lights all bunches up into white and when it hits the prism, it turns back into the original colours like if the rainbow colours bunch up, it will turn into one colour called white. Then if it hits something like a raindrop it turns back to the other colours. if a red light hits a green object like grass, it won’t reflect because it is a different colour but if you shine a blue light into a blue object it will reflect back because it is the same colour.

Dear Auckland Transport

Tuesday, 30th August, 2016
Dear Auckland Transport,

I hope that you know that the death rate from trains has gone up. You need to do something about. Not doing anything to people who had recently died is not okay. Trains are dangerous and can kill people at a instant. The relatives from people who had died from trains are sad and unhappy that someone that is loved so much is now gone and won’t be there when they are in big problems. It is very very sad because there is a hole in her wife heart.

You should add more safety that doesn't include danger. You should set up train cones near the train tracks or you could put loudspeakers in the front of the train to warn the people who are crossing the train tracks. I agree from the the new modern rules and design that you have come up with but there is occurs to the train that needs to be fixed

The conclusion is you listen to our ideas to prevent train deaths from happening in 2016 and the next years.

Yours Sincerely
Sam

Science Intensive

Yesterday, Glenbrae school are doing science through the week. My class had to split into two groups so each group can go to each teacher. Ms Stones group went down to room three to do their science and my group stayed in class.  My group learned about the famous scientists named Isaac Newton and how he created the three movements. In my group, we split up into two groups so we could work on each movement and then we work together on the third movement. We learned all about forces and Inertia. Our groups were supposed to swap after morning tea but Mrs Elia told us to go back to our first group. My group made some cars and try to make it move using balloons. It was boys against girls. The girls won because their balloon went forward as ours did front flips.

Kiwi Can

Today we had Kiwi Can with Mr A again. It was boring but it was still fun. We first lined up out of Kiwi can and waited for Mr A to introduce us into his class. Mr A to four people to line up behind the cones. Mr A told us to go four by four. We all lined up behind the first four people. When we lined up, we started of our routine for Kiwi Can. First of all, he greeted us by saying Kia Orana. We learned about resilience and Goal setting. We had to find out the meaning of resilience and Goal setting. One of the people in our class said the meaning and another person said the other meaning.

After that, Mr A told us the energiser and it was team Limbo. Each team had to find out who could go the lowest. My team went pretty low but another team went lower than my team. Next, we played limbo with elimination. Who ever touched the pole or the ground with their hands is out. Lindakiki's team was the winner.

Next we went back into our four lines so we get on to our next activity. When we got into our lines, we learned all kinds of stuff like what are we going to do when we grow up or how to get to set a goal. We can set short term goals to get to our Long term goals.

After that, Our activity was to get into a group of four and work out what we are we going to do in the future. We had to set a Long term goal, we had to find how we are going to get there, what is the timeline to get there and how to pratise to get there.

Kiwi Sport ( Volley Ball)

Today Kiwi sport was really fun. When we got there we saw that the nets were already up. First of all, we lined up on the line and waited for the coach to come and tell us what to do. She told us what is the most important move in netball and we all had different answer's. Our coach tricked us because the most important move is all of the moves.

Next we had to find a partner to practise with so we can play properly when we verse our own classmates. First of all, we had to throw the ball to our partner on the other side of the net and we had to hit the ball up and catch. Next we had a competition to first to 20 passes and catching to your partner.

Next we split up into teams. Each team versed different teams at a different time. Some of the teams won and some of the teams lost there matches.

The Show at Glenbrae School

Today our school went to the hall because we had a show about music, books and your imagination. Room 7 and Room 8 was sitting on the chairs on each side of the hall. The rest of the school was sitting down around the people that were doing the show. There show was really cool and their name of the show was called the Shine A Light. They had all these kind of good ideas to encourage people to read and to have a fun time while reading. This show was also about exploring new adventures everyday. There was 2 people and their names were Rose and Richard. Richard was the boy and Rose was the girl.Richard was scared of monsters under the bed ghosts and monster in the wardrobe but eventually he faced his fears with his bright magic camp lamp. Rose also had fears and was scared of her magic mirror because the mirror was mean and was nearly taking over her. Today Room 7 had to recite our poems to everyone in our class. We were already studying and learning about poetry in our class. Everyone did their poems and 6 people got to recite our poems on Friday afternoon. We have one more day to remember our poems off by heart so we can say our poems to the school fluently.  Some people didn't do there's because they were sick and they didn't come to school when we were studying about it.

Netball Skills

Today, my class had another session of Netball. We had our session with a lady called Anne. First of all, Anne told us to do a warm up by playing Shadow Follower. We did that kind of warm because we needed to learn how to defend the ball. When we finished our warm up, we did an intercept activity. We had 4 team members in one group. 2 people had to pass it to each other and the other 2 had to try to intercept it. It was a lot of fun but we had to move on. Next, we played the game called the Four corner attack. 1 person had to stay in the middle and try to turn were the number of the balls came from. There were only four corners but the only thing was that there was another person in the middle try to block where the ball came from. We played that game for only about like 5 - 8 minutes. Next, we played another game called the shooting game. We split up the class because we had to have 2 teams. we all had numbers and I was number 2. Whatever number she said we had to go to the middle and get the ball and pass it to everyone in our team in order so when the ball when around everyone, they have to pass it back to you and you have to shoot it in the hoop. My team one by 24 and the other team had 16 points. After that our session was finished and we went back to class.

Kiwi Sport Netball

Today we had a netball session for kiwi sport with this lady called Anne. Anne came to our school to teach us some netball skills. Anne taught us some skill's like the pivot, your stance and defending.

The first thing that we did today was a warm up. The coach split the class in half and took half of the class to the other side of the court and the other half to the other side of the court. After that, we had to run to each other and high five and then come back to the line. When we finished our warm up we had a game of netball  but the rules were different, we had to start in a line in the middle and we have to try and get to the other side and bounce it at the edge of the other side.

Science Investigation

Science Investigation

We are learning what plants need to survive
We are learning how plants respond to environmental changes.

What do plants need to survive?

Water
Sun
Soil/ fertilizer/ dirt
Oxygen
Carbon dioxide

We are going to conduct a science investigation to determine what will happen to plants when their environment changes. In this assignment we will be changing the environment of each of the mint plants and the potatoes.

What will we need to make this a fair investigation?
  • Lots of plants in case one fails
  • Make sure they all get the same amount of sun
  • Make sure they still have the other things they need to survive
  • Monitor progress every few days - with pictures
  • Have a “control” plant, that we do all the right things to.

Method:
  • Suffocate a plant - by putting it in a container
  • Stop watering a plant
  • Take out the soil
  • Put in the dark
  • Normal plant - the control

Hypothesis: I think it will die because it has no soil.

The plant I will be observing is: Taking out the soil.

Observation day 1: It was all healthy on the first day.

Observation day 2: It was droopy and it was getting pale.

Observation day 3: The plant was still droopy and it got more pale.

Observation day 4: The mint plant is turning dead and getting darker.

Observation day 7: Now the mint plant is flat and its dead.

Explanation: Why did this happen to my plant?
The mint plant died because the plant didn’t have any soil and because it needs dirt to help it stay strong.

Sharing Lollies
We are learning to identify equivalent fractions

Maara and her three friends are going to share a licorice lace. If the lace is 12cm long, what length of the lace will each friend get? What fraction will they get? 1/4

2 other friends approach Maara and would like some of the lace too. How can they split the lace (which has already been cut into quarters) between 6 people equally.
2/12

What would happen if yet another two friends wanted a share?3/24

How many cm of the lace would they recieve?
3/12

Maths Work

We have been learning about fractions and decimals in this term.
Equivalent Fractions!
We are learning to add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators.

Levi has ¾ of a bag of lollies. If he is given another 3/12 of a bag, what fraction of a bag will he have? 1 Whole

If there were 32 lollies in the whole bag, how many lollies does Levi have? 32 Lollies

Bob has a 3 3/4 metre of length of wood. He cuts off 2 1/3 metres.
What length of wood is left?
3,9/12 - 2,4/12 = 1,5/12

Nz Zealand Native Tree - Black Fern

Term 1 and Term 2, we have been learning about the Black Fern Tree

Thursday, 12 May 2016

Native Bush Trip

On Wednesday 11th of May 2016, The Glenbrae seniors went to
Waitakere Ranges Forest. Here’s what they learnt
  •  What we learnt, we learnt that red berries are a sign for birds to come and eat the berries, when they eat the berries, the birds eat the fleshy part and in the middle of it, it will release a hard seed - which comes out after excreting and where it drops new berries will grow.

  • We also learnt that a kauri tree can live up to 20 centuries old and it can grow up to 400 metres tall.

  • The kauri tree is one of biggest trees in the world. The famous kauri tree is located in the far north of New Zealand. The name of the biggest tree in New Zealand is Tane Mahuta, Tane Mahuta is the god of the forest.

  • We learnt that the forest people will take leaves from the tea tree and make tea out of it, most adult men would call their kids to come and climb up and grab the tea leaves .

  • We also had the chance to learn about the bird rates. Waitakere birds have gone down because of the pests mostly the possum have eaten the birds and the other things in the forest but now we put traps in the forest and now the possums have died and the bird rates have gone up.

  • I learnt that an adult kauri tree can grow up to 400 metre tall. A kauri tree can live for 2000 years. The oldest tree in New Zealand is Tane Mahuta lives up to 1,250 years and it is still standing there until today.

In the end, we all had a good time. Thx for watching

WE ARE LEARNING TO find fractions of whole and fixed numbers

Today we are participating in a real life problem. Our group will need to work out how to find the fraction of whole and mixed numbers in order to keep everyone happy...

Yesterday we were left with 6 chocolate bars split between 13 children. How much chocolate would each child now receive?
Each person will get 6 / 13chocolate each.

Miss stone doesn’t feel like chocolate today. How much chocolate would each child receive if their are seven chocolate bars.7/13

There were supposed to be 14 children in our group, how much chocolate would each child receive if there were 7 chocolate bars. They will get 7/14

Ripper Rugby Session

Today, Matt came from Varsity to teach us Ripper rugby. Room 7 went to the field because Matt was teaching us Ripper rugby first. He came with belts and tags so we can use them to for Ripper rugby. First of all, we went to warm up by playing ripper rush, It’s like bull rush but you use ripper tags.

After we finished our warm up we did some passing so we can learn how to put our hands up and catch. When we finished passing we went to play a game. There was a yellow team and a white team.

We learnt how to pass the ball properly, putting your hands up to catch, timing when you pass the ball, running on time, focusing on the ball, staying in the right line and staying behind the passer.

About Me

About Me

Hi my name is Sam, I am a Tongan. I was born New Zealand, at Greenlane hospital. I am year 8. I go to a School called Glenbrae School. My fear is Natural disaster’s and big gross stuff like dead rats.

I like to play Rugby with my friends, my family, my classmates and my Rugby union team. My brother’s also likes to play Rugby and they go to the same Rugby club as me called Varsity. My Dad use to play rugby when he was a little boy. My mum use to play sport games in the pacific. My day played rugby league first until his coach introduced him to Rugby Union. My dad played rugby up to his 20’s.

At school my favorite subject is sometimes Maths but mostly Fitness. In school my houses color is Kowhai. I like to play outdoor activities, inside activities and games in my spare time. My favorite color is purple and blue.

Recount on Ripper Rugby

On Tuesday, March 15, 2016, A person from Varsity came to our school to play Ripper Rugby. The Ripper Rugby coaches name is Matt. He plays rugby for his own team too.

Ripper Rugby is a cool game, you have a belt that you can wrap around your waist. Once you have the belt on you have 2 tags that stick on to your belt.  There are two teams and the way to win is to get more points than the other team. You can only stay in the cones or you will go out and you will hand over the ball to the other team. You have only 40 minutes to play and you have a break at half time.

We learnt how to catch the ball by putting up our hands and calling them out so they can pass the ball to you.

I felt that we should train some more because we always dropped the ball when we were going to catch it. Heaps of people need to learn how to catch too.
